What’s Your Flavor … Your Song

July 30, 2010 by Lori Wilhite

A few days ago I saw this little Tweet from Jess:

Ahh … sweet. Except I just HAD to know … HAD to, I tell you … know what their song was.

Then, she tweeted me back these lyrics:

You were my strength when I was weak

You were my voice when I couldn’t speak

You were my eyes when I couldn’t see

You saw the best there was in me

Lifted me up when I couldn’t reach

You gave me faith ’cause you belived

Everyone sing along now. Jud and I did … at the top of our lungs in the living room. Good times.

Anyway … this was followed by another worried tweet from Jess that Twitter world would think that she was sending these lyrics to me. But if they did, no worries. The truth is … if I was her “voice when she couldn’t speak” it would all be fine since I have a Texas accent too, so maybe people wouldn’t really notice the difference.

So … all of this got me curious as to what everyone else’s songs are. I guess most couples have them.

Ours is this song “Date for Life” from this awesome hippy band Aunt Betsy. Yes, we had to change a few words for the wedding, but it is an awesome song that no one has ever heard of. But we love it.

Ok … your turn … what’s “your song”?  And you get bonus points if you make us guess the song and just write some of the lyrics. Oh yes … this could be a fun game.

Ok, well since the title of the song and the first 6 words of the song are the same it kinda spoils the game part.

Our song is “She’s Got A Way About Her” by Billy Joel. I must say that the dude singing it at our wedding reception absolutely butchered it so not a soul there recognized the song. My husband can immitate the butchered version to this day and I love it almost as much as I do the original!

As a wedding attender, I love horrible wedding singers. It is super entertaining. :)

I don’t think too many know this song so I’m just coming out with it now. Our Song is called “We Will Dance” by Steven Curtis Chapman. Here are the lyrics. We actually just turned it on last night and danced to it as we are celebrating our 6th anniversary.

I’ve watched the sunrise in your eyes
And I’ve seen the tears fall like the rain
You’ve seen me fight so brave and strong
You’ve held my hand when I’m afraid

We’ve watched the seasons come and go
We’ll see them come and go again
But in winter’s chill, or summer’s breeze
One thing will not be changin’

We will dance
When the sun is shining
In the pouring rain
We’ll spin and we’ll sway
And we will dance
When the gentle breeze
Becomes a hurricane
The music will play
And I’ll take your hand
And hold you close to me
And we will dance

Sometimes it’s hard to hold you tight
Sometimes we feel so far apart
Sometimes we dance as one
And feel the beating of each others hearts

Some days the dance is slow and sweet
Some days we’re bouncing off the walls
No matter how this world may turn
Our love will keep us from fallin’

And we will dance
When the sun is shining
In the pouring rain
We’ll spin and we’ll sway
And we will dance
When the gentle breeze
Becomes a hurricane
The music will play
And I’ll take your hand
And hold you close to me
And we will dance

The music will play
And I’ll hold you close
And I won’t let you go
Even when our steps
Grow weak and slow
Still I’ll take your hand
And hold you close to me
And we, will dance

I guess the lyrics kind of give away the song…so I’m only giving the first verse!

Baby I’ve been searching like everybody else
Can’t say nothing different about myself
Sometimes I’m an angel
And sometimes I’m cruel
And when it comes to love
I’m just another fool
Yes, I’ll climb a mountain
I’m gonna swim the sea
There ain’t no act of God girl
Could keep you safe from me
My arms are reaching out
Out across this canyon
I’m asking you to be my true companion

My guess is that Carrie’s is “True Companion” by Marc Cohn? Great song!

Here are the lyrics to my husband and I’s song (with the title omitted) …

Tomorrow morning if you wake up and the sun does not appear …
If in the dark we loose sight of love hold my hand and have no fear …

Oooh Angie – pick me pick me…I know…SCC I will be here…love that song!!! The 1st verse of ours is:

They read you Cinderella
You hoped it would come true
That one day your Prince Charming
Would come rescue you
You like romantic movies
You never will forget
The way you felt when Romeo kissed Juliet
All this time that you’ve been waiting
You don’t have to wait no more

Ok… here’s the first verse of our song. Oh and this is the version from the country artist (can you name this person?) which is funny because my husband has always hated country music, but this song he liked.

I see the questions in your eyes
I know what’s weighing on your mind
That you can be sure I know my heart

`Cause I’ll stand beside you through the years
You’ll only cry those happy tears
And though I make mistakes
I’ll never break your heart

You probably do know this song. It’s “I Swear” which was redone by All-4-One… but we liked the version by John Michael Montgomery. And my husband hates country.

You’re totally right Holly! I do know that All-4-One version. But obviously not well enough to know the verse on sight. :)

Fun! I’ll play along!

We picked out our wedding song and when it was time to have our first dance, the DJ put the wrong song on. But, after Jon kept telling me to relax and to listen closely, I realized he wrote and recorded our wedding song that he wrote. I cried like a baby and felt so bad for being “diva-like” towards the DJ…haha…I mean, of all songs to mess up, right?! Thankfully, he didn’t mess up and it was all part of the plan. Here’s the chorus to our song:

“Tonight, I pledge to you my life. Tonight, I call you my wife. Tonight, I look into your eyes and say, you are beautiful, in every way. All my life I’ve longed for this moment, When I would hear your voice, hear you call me your husband, All my life I’ve waited for this day, when I could say, that our two lives have become one.”

August 16th is our 8 year wedding anniversary and every year we play it and dance together in our living room. I love wedding…I’m a sucker for mushy romance. <3

Lori, this one is super easy. :-) This is one of our songs – we have about 3 lol.

Ain’t nothin’ better
We beat the odds together
I’m glad we didn’t listen
Look at what we would be missin’
They said, “I bet they’ll never make it”
But just look at us holding on
We’re still together still going strong

Warning … spoiler coming. Here’s the chorus:

(You’re still the one)
You’re still the one I run to
The one that I belong to
You’re still the one I want for life
(You’re still the one)
You’re still the one that I love
The only one I dream of
You’re still the one I kiss good night
You’re still the one

Love this!! Ok, playing the first or last lines of this short song give it away, so here’s a snippet of the middle:

“I found a dream
that I could speak to
A dream that I
can call my own
I found a thrill
to press my cheek to
A thrill that I have never known
Ohh, yeah, yeah”
