She Talks With An Accent…

Posted by Brandi Wilson

Today I’m going public with one of our deepest, darkest marriage secrets… we repeatedly fight over directions.  It’s happened for years.  It’s not his fault.  It’s not my fault.  It’s just how we function when we’re traveling together.  And by traveling together I mean sometimes we’re just going across town and we still might argue about how to get there.

Where’s this going?  Well, yesterday was our 14 year anniversary and I finally realized that we were never going to be able to “fix” our directional differences.  We’ve discussed these directional issues many times in the past and how he wants me to be his navigator… but it still results in some intense fellowship from time to time! 🙂

So, yesterday he arrived home from work to a wrapped gift and a note that said…

I love being your partner in life but I lovingly resign as your navigator. For our anniversary I’m giving you another woman.  Say hello to Eleanor.

Yes, for our anniversary I gave my husband another woman.  Eleanor went on our date last night and we both fell in love with her.  Not only did we arrive at our destination without argument… we actually arrived with smiles.

And the best part of it all… Eleanor has an accent.

Most of our heavy disagreements in our 7 1/2 years of marriage have been in the car and over directions. Our first real argument was about directions while we were on our honeymoon. Our GPS has helped so much.

Brandi this is so funny! The church gave Marc a GPS for his 2nd Anniversary. Since he travels a lot with his business they thought it would help since he tends to drive with a map in his hands! The first day he used it he called me to tell me there was some bossy lady in a box trying to tell him where to go and that when he didn’t go her way she kept yelling “recalculating”!

LOL – When I first started reading this I thought to myself, “They need a GPS”. We started out with Jill but sadly she passed away last year in the middle of Indiana when we were on our way to Nashville – leaving us clueless on how to go on without her. So we now have Koko who is a beautiful Australian woman with more to offer than Jill. We couldn’t be happier. (She was named Koko because we had to buy her in Kokomo,Indiana.)

My Hubs & I fight about every time we get in the vehicle together & its always about directions! Biting my tongue is definitely something I’m working on 🙂 My loving mother wanted to get us a GPS for Christmas but I said we didnt need it…I’m regretting that decision now haha!

I would need her to tell my husband when he needs to slow it down. A talking speed limit monitor … that would help me keep my mouth shut. 🙂

Ours is Sally. She too is a bit bossy – but she doesn’t have a fun accent to make it feel a bit less harsh. She is a lifesaver however, so we forgive her for her bossiness.

Great anniversary gift – there are all kinds of ways to solve those stubborn issues in our relationships.

    Happy anniversary!

I got my hubby a GARMIN for his birthday… And I’m the one who uses it mostly. I tried to set it to the British man’s voice, but he likes the woman’s so we call her Garmina. And we still argue over directions! Your story is so fun. Thanks for sharing! And Happy Anniversary!

Our GPS has saved our marriage and made me enjoy road trips again! No more frantically twisting the map to make it the direction we’re going while my husband emphatically reminds me that he needs to know where to turn NOW!
I discovered a cool feature this week, though, that I never knew our GPS had. We were coming home from a concert out of town and were looking for a place to eat. We wanted pizza but it was after 10pm on a weekday and most places we saw were closed. My hubby punched in “pizza” in the GPS and it showed us all the pizza places in our route. I was able to pick one, call the phone number provided on the GPS, and place our order so they had it ready by the time we reached the exit where they were located. They were just closing, but met us at the door with piping hot pizza to go. Another date night saved by GPS! ( =
